DENVER -- The heat will continue for the next two days with 90s expected on both Thursday and Friday. Thursday looks like it will be the hottest day of the week with highs in the mid to upper 90s across the plains and 80s throughout the high country. These daytime highs will be about 10 to 12 degrees above average. There will be a break from the scorching temperatures this weekend. Our next cold front will slide in early Saturday morning. Temperatures will cool into the 80s on both Saturday and Sunday, with a chance of storms each day. It's been a pretty active start to the month, but that's expected for July. The National Weather Service estimates that on average, 11 days of the month tend to be stormy.
Any rain this weekend will be a welcome sight. So far, it's been a relatively dry and warm month. The Climate Prediction Center estimates that temperatures in the southwestern part of the country will remain above average July, August and September. This is not good news for firefighters in California. The hot, dry and windy weather this week has made it extremely difficult to fight the hundreds of wildfires burning across the state.
