DIA Sets Another Monthly Traffic Record
April's Passenger Count Up 1 Percent
Denver International Airport set another monthly traffic record in April, but it is expected to decline toward year's end due to airline cuts and the weakening economy.More than 4 million travelers used DIA in April, up 1 percent from April 2007. In the past four months, more than 16.4 million passengers used the airport, compared to 15.6 million in the first four months of 2007, the airport said in a news release on Thursday. It was still the busiest April ever at the Denver airport, and the 16th straight month in which passenger traffic at DIA set a monthly record.
Though the airport is pleased with the 1 percent increase, aiport officials said that it's a smaller increase than usual, perhaps reflecting a decrease in flights and the number of people flying."We expect these numbers to remain strong throughout the summer travel season. However, given the very high cost of fuel to the airline industry and the recent announcement of capacity cuts by a number of carriers serving DIA, we are prepared to see a reduction in passenger traffic at the airport during the final months of 2008," Aviation Manager Kim Day said Thursday.DIA reported a 2.8 percent increase in the number of flights during April, compared with the same month of 2007. The year-to-date total for flight operations increased to 206,500, up 3.1 percent from April of last year.
