DENVER -- The Denver family who died from carbon monoxide poisoning in an Aspen home had won the trip as part of a fundraiser, according to published reports. The bodies of Parker Lofgren, 39, his wife Caroline, 42, and their children, Owen, 10, and Sophie, 8, were found Friday in the nearly $9-million estate near Independence Pass, east of Aspen.A second family, who also won a silent auction for the right to stay at 3,250-square-foot home at 10 Popcorn Lane during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, found the bodies in beds in the home just before 5 p.m.
The last time anyone heard from the family was on Thursday afternoon when Caroline Lofgren sent a text message to friends.A team of technicians determined the house's hot water and snow melting systems malfunctioned. This caused the extreme levels of carbon monoxide in the house. The home is owned Black Diamond Land Development Corp., Denver, according to the Pitkin County Assessor's Office and was recently built. The registered agent is Jonathan M. Thomas, according to the Colorado Secretary of State's Office.Authorities said carbon monoxide detectors were not installed in the $8.95-million home, which is listed for sale. The Lofgren children were enrolled at St. Anne's Episcopal Church and School. A prayer service for the family was held at the school Monday morning and attendance at the school was optional on Monday. It is the second family tragedy affecting St. Anne's school in the last four months. In August, students Sam and Grace Masoudi were killed when a plane crashed into the vacation home their parents were renting in Gearhart, Ore. Their cousin, Julia Reimann, also died in addition to two people in the plane: Jason Ketchson and Frank Toohey, of Oregon.Funeral arrangements for the Lofgren family were pending Monday. Their bodies were in Grand Junction, awaiting autopsies.
