COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- A prominent surgeon has been found stabbed to death at his Colorado Springs home, apparently at the hands of his own son, police said. Police said 63-year-old Dr. Edward Fitzgerald was killed Thursday morning in a clash with his son, 36-year-old Sean Fitzgerald. The younger Fitzgerald has been arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder. No motive has been released.
The victim was an orthopedic surgeon who once led the El Paso County Medical Society. An autopsy is pending.Police were called to the home around 2:30 a.m. by a woman who reported that her son had just stabbed her husband. Dr. Edward Fitzgerald was stabbed once in the chest, police said.The victim's son surrendered to police at the home.The elder Fitzgerald was affiliated with Front Range Orthopaedics, specializing in foot and ankle surgery. He helped write legislation on the care of dying patients, as well as guidelines for the Colorado Division of Labor on the management of lower back pain.
