DENVER -- One person is dead after a train slammed into a car Wednesday morning in Las Animas, Colo. The crash occurred shortly before 8 a.m. at a crossing at 10th Street and Grove Avenue. Witnesses said the driver tried to beat the train as she crossed the tracks, but didn't have enough time to get all the way across before the train struck.
Authorities said no one on the train was hurt. The victim's name has not been released. Las Animas is about 145 miles southeast of Denver.In another crash involving a car and train, an 84-year-old woman suffered minor injuries, but her Toyota Camry was totaled, when it was hit by a slow-moving train in Englewood just before 11 a.m.A Burlington Northern Santa Fe train, consisting only of two engines, was heading northbound on railroad tracks crossing West Dartmouth Avenue when police said the woman drove around a flagman into the train's path.The flagman was in the roadway trying to stop traffic and the train was sounding its horn when the woman went around him.The train hit the car on the front left passenger side and pushed it approximately 50 feet down the track.The female driver, who was not identified by police, was cited for disregarding a railroad flagman.The train was not damaged.Meanwhile, Pueblo police continued thier investigation into the death of a 16-year-old boy whose body was found on railroad tracks near the Pueblo Mall on Sunday.The death of Cordero J. Torrez has been ruled "suspicious" by police. He was about to turn 17 in four days when he was hit by a passing train. He was last seen with friends at the mall.
