DENVER -- A fireworks display in Castle Rock was called off after fallout from a professional show ignited a brush fire near the spectators.

Many people at the show complained that it was too short, not realizing the show was stopped for their personal safety, said Community Relations Manager Angela Copeland.

"The show simply couldn’t continue as protecting people and property are of paramount importance," Copeland said.

Three acres were burned by four brush fires. No damage was reported, she said.

"Fireworks are completely unpredictable," said Capt. Bob Smith of the Parker South Metro Fire Department. "It was threatening the unexploded fireworks and that's why we had to close the show down."

"We had pre-planned the event and located where the fires might occur," said Fire Chief Art Morales. “We were fortunate in that we had staffed extra brush trucks, and had pre-staged them."

The darkness and thick brush made reaching the fire challenging. The fires were under control by 3 a.m., but crews stayed overnight and Saturday to watch hotspots in case any reignited, Copeland said.
