BERTHOUD, Colo. -- The Berthoud Fire Department responded to a wildland fire that was threatening homes Friday afternoon and continued to battle it into the evening. Two other fires were burning in Highlands Ranch.

The first fire was reported in Bennett at 251 Del Rio Road, near North View and Bennett streets at 2:25 p.m. That is south of Carter Lake.

The estimated size of the fire early on was 12 acres, but it was continuing to burn at 5 p.m. and had jumped several roads.

By 5 p.m., a single-engine air tanker had made three 800-gallon drops of slurry on the fire, and a second tanker was requested.

Loveland fire, Poudre Fire Authority, Larimer County, Mountain View Fire and the U.S. Forest Service were helping battle the blaze and provide structure protection.

Meanwhile, a 20-acre grass fire erupted in Highlands Ranch Friday afternoon.

The first call came in at 4:16 p.m.

The fire was on the south side of Highlands Ranch, just off Daniels Park Road and south of the Southridge Recreation Center.

The Littleton Fire Department had 13 engines and one brush truck helping fight the blaze. South Metro Fire and Parker Fire were also involved in fighting the fire.

The grass fire was 70 percent contained by 5 p.m. and authorities said no homes were threatened.

A second grass fire was reported a short time later, near Highlands Ranch Parkway, between Broadway and University.

The fast moving fire damaged a home on the 9000 block of South Laurel Court. Flames destroyed part of a fence, blackened trees and melted siding on the home. Neighbors formed a bucket brigade to throw water on the fire at one point.

Fire officials said the second fire in Highlands Ranch was blamed on fireworks and two men in their 20s were being questioned. At least one of the men faced felony arson charges Friday night. The fire size was estimated at 6 acres.

Earlier, a fire burned in Arapahoe County near Quincy Reservoir. The Cunningham Fire Department said the fire involved brush and ground cover in an open area that is surrounded by homes on both sides and Quincy Reservoir on the west side.

Cunningham Fire received assistance from the Parker-South Metro Fire Authority and the Aurora Fire Department and there were approximately 26 firefighters called out.

Fireworks were found in the area where the fire started and are believed to be the cause of that fire.
