DENVER -- The impact of record-breaking gas prices is trickling down to local charities, including Meals on Wheels.

The agency is powered, at least in part, by gasoline.

Volunteers deliver most of the meals and pay for their own gas.

Meals on Wheels fuels its fleet of 13 vans, and it must now pay a fuel surcharge to its food distributor.

"We're able to provide less with the same amount of money," said Heather Spencer with Volunteer of America, which oversees 30 programs, including Meals on Wheels. "It's the perfect storm. Our very generous donors are also not able to give quite the amount that they did."

She said they have not lost any volunteers, but fewer new volunteers have signed up, and many ask questions about how far they would have to drive.

She said they are making an effort to concentrate the delivery routes to make driving more efficient for volunteers.

Meanwhile, the service for needy seniors is needed more than ever.

Meals on Wheels has had a 15 percent increase in demand and has a waiting list of 250 seniors.
