Ross Leads Fish Past Bravos

POSTED: 1:22 am MDT September 4, 2008

(Sports Network) - Cody Ross' run-scoring single in the bottom of the seventh inning proved to be the difference as Florida downed Atlanta, 5-3, in the rubber match of a three-game set at Dolphin Stadium.

Hanley Ramirez homered for the Marlins, who have won three of their past five games. Jeremy Hermida finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.

"We're trying to win every single game we go out there," Ross said. "It just so happens that the other team we're playing, for some reason, comes back and beats us after we win. We just have to be consistent and put together a run."

Chris Volstad, Florida's first pick (16th overall) in the 2005 draft, surrendered three runs on six hits and five walks in six innings. Doug Waechter (4-2) earned the win with a scoreless seventh inning.

Kelly Johnson was 2-for-3 with a two-run triple for the struggling Braves, who have lost 18 of their last 23 games.

Jorge Campillo started on the hill and allowed three runs on four hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in five innings. Will Ohman (4-1) lost after allowing a run in one inning of relief.

"I thought he (Campillo) threw great," Braves manager Bobby Cox said. "He had a lot of strikeouts, nothing really hit hard, just the one home run by (Hanley) Ramirez and that was it."

With the game even at three, the Marlins took control with a pair of runs in the seventh inning. Hermida singled to left off Ohman and the Braves went to the bullpen, bringing on Vladimir Nunez.

The move backfired, however. After pinch-hitter Robert Andino fouled out, Ramirez doubled to right and John Baker was intentionally walked to load the bases. Ross singled up the middle to give Florida the lead and Nunez then uncorked a wild pitch, allowing another run to score and making it a 5-3 game.

Andrew Miller and Joe Nelson came on from there with an inning of scoreless relief apiece to nail things down. Nelson earned his first save of the season with a perfect ninth.

The Marlins jumped on top when Ramirez belted his 29th homer of the year, a solo shot, deep over the wall in center with two outs in the third.

The Braves bounced back with three runs in the fourth. Yunel Escobar led off with a single and was quickly replaced by pinch-runner Brent Lillibridge after aggravating his left shoulder. After Omar Infante came up with a one-out single, Johnson cleared the bases by lacing a triple to right-center. Jeff Francoeur followed with an RBI double to cap the frame.

Florida answered with two runs in the fourth. Ross drew a walk to lead off the frame and swiped second with two down. After Dallas McPherson walked, Josh Willingham and Hermida slapped consecutive RBI singles up the middle to deadlock things at 3-3.

Game Notes

Cox was ejected for arguing balls and strikes in the fifth inning. Cox was disputing a strike called against Brian McCann when home plate umpire Mark Wegner tossed the manager. It was the 143rd time Cox has been ejected, an ongoing major league record. Hall of Fame manager John McGraw is second in ejections with 131...McPherson got his first start as a member of the Marlins...Atlanta still leads the season series 10-8...Attendance was just 11,211.
