Parker's DogBlog - BANG!

Chapter 60

July 1, 2008

OK, people, let's go over this one more time.

Dogs (and cats, actually animals in general) do not like fireworks. Loud noises and bright lights do not make us say "Oooohh" and "Aaaahh." Whatever weird pleasure you humans get from fireworks is completely lost on the animal kingdom. Loud noises and bright lights make us panic and feel like we need to run away, hide or both. Some of us get so frightened we pull out of our collars or chew through our leashes, claw through screen doors, jump high fences, or chew through wood doors. Some pets get physically sick from fear.

Please keep your pets safe this Fourth of July by using these tips:

  • Make sure Buster is wearing a collar with current, legible tags so if he panics and escapes the nice person who finds him can bring him home or call you.
  • DO NOT, DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT take Buster to the fireworks display. He doesn't want to sit with you in the park or wait for you in the car. He would much rather be at home tucked away in his crate or curled up in his favorite chair. Close the curtains and leave music or the TV on low.
  • If the naughty children next door insist on shooting off firecrackers long after the Fourth is over and Buster seems upset, distract him with a game of fetch or have him practice his commands for a few kibbles. You can reassure him things are OK, but don't go overboard or he'll think he's being praised for being frightened. (Some dogs are easily confused!)
  • These tips work for thunderstorms, too!
  • Are we clear? I hope so. I do NOT want to hear any tragic stories about lost or injured pets.

Have a happy Fourth and chow for now!
