DENVER -- The park is where all good dogs take their owners on a warm sunny day.Often when there is a mutt in the mix the conversation turns to the inevitable. Archie, a 5-year-old mixed breed, and his owner gets those questions all the time."Everyone, every time I take the dog out ask what he is," said Cathy Cohen.
Cohen didn't have an answer, until now.A new DNA test from Mars Veterinary called Wisdom Panel MX delivers the results in three weeks. It costs roughly $150 and requires a draw of blood.Cindy Lee paid for the test following similar questions about her dog, Baxter. She thinks he's Newfoundland and Border Collie. Three weeks later, Lee got a surprise."Well, I guess the results were more internal than external. The results were Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Dog, Aussie Shepherd and an English Setter," said Lee.Cohen was equally confused with the results."Archie here is a shar pei and a chow mix. I was really surprised about the chow," said Cohen.Dr. Dean Vicksman, of Evans East Animal Hospital, said the test will tell pet owners what their mixed breed is composed of up among the 130 American Kennel Club-recognized breeds. He just recently started offering the tests in his office."This gives us the potential as veterinarians to identify what these mixed breeds are made of and that, in turn, allows us to help predict maybe some of the genetic diseases that some of the animals might be susceptible to," said Vicksman. It part confirmation and part confusion. It's an interesting test for owners interested in unraveling the mutt mystery.Right now, it is only for mixed breeds. The company is working on a test for pure breeds but said it's not ready yet.
