DENVER -- Summer is home improvement time but beware of home improvement scams. The following simple tips from fraud expert Mason Finks can keep you from becoming a victim.Never allow someone to pressure you into a hasty decision. If someone tells you there is a serious problem get a second or third opinion before proceeding with the repairs. Before doing business with any company, check its record with the Better Business Bureau and see if it's registered with the Colorado Secretary of State.
Get a written contract detailing what work will be done, what materials will be used, what the project will cost, when the work will begin and when it will be completed. Pay for the work as it is completed and avoid large advance deposits. Most of home improvement complaints to the district attorney's Consumer Protection Line involve large deposits paid in advance. If you have questions or want additional information, please call the district attorney's Consumer Protection Line at 720-874-8547.In addition, the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies licenses plumbers and electricians and offers tips to consumers.
